![]() ![]() The growth in the number of asylums was largely driven by the County Asylum / Lunacy Act. As the name of the legislation suggests, there was little concern for patient’s sensibilities, and typically patients were described as lunatics, imbeciles, insane, idiots or cretins. This was superseded in 1853 by The Lunatic Asylums Act. Patients were often considered as ‘mad’ as suggested by The Mad House Act of 1774. Not that the term mental health had been coined at that time. It had been a hospital since 1247 but began to admit patients with mental health conditions around 1407. ![]() The first known asylum in the UK was at Bethlem Royal Hospital in London. The Victorian Era may not have been the start of the institutionalisation of patients with mental health problems, but it was certainly a period when the numbers of asylums and patients treated within them, exploded.
